I always keep my ass tied to the hitching post on the pooldeck, that way he get some sun. No one appreciates a pale donkey!

From our friends at the Online Writing Lab [OWL] at Purdue University:

Quote:
Don't use apostrophes for possessive pronouns or for noun plurals.

Apostrophes should not be used with possessive pronouns because possessive pronouns already show possession -- they don't need an apostrophe. His, her, its, my, yours, ours are all possessive pronouns. Here are some examples:

wrong: his' book
correct: his book

wrong: The group made it's decision.
correct: The group made its decision.

(Note: Its and it's are not the same thing. It's is a contraction for "it is" and its is a possesive pronoun meaning "belonging to it." It's raining out= it is raining out. A simple way to remember this rule is the fact that you don't use an apostrophe for the possesives his or hers, so don't do it with its!)

wrong: a friend of yours'
correct: a friend of yours

wrong: She waited for three hours' to get her ticket.
correct: She waited for three hours to get her ticket.

I see this type of typo almost daily, so figured I'd shed some light. :)

Who let the grammer police in the thread?

I used it correctly even if I can't spell soaking. I'm not sure who you're trying to correct.

I checked the last 2 pages of this thread and couldn't find any violations of the cited apostrophe rule.

After you go on this adventure for enough years, they actually reward you! After 4 years you get a pimp bathrobe, next year you earn a hammock...pretty suave!!! :P 8)

54a) You can sleep nicely on the beach or the boat.
54b) Ocean immersion helps cure hangovers (thanks, Sammy!).
55a) If it's still moving, don't eat it -- or you'll taste it twice.
56a) There are comfy places to sleep on the boat besides your room.
57a) Bring little containers and small packs with pockets that will not easily be blown overboard (attach to solid object when boat is moving).

As for the typo, it's not on this thread. It's on an email. But it's superficial, like most grammer (sic) mistakes. Just an observation that is also relatively trivial (as some of these Jamcruise "observations", we can debate which are the most useful ones, but already it's a huge list! ;-} ).

It's also pedantic to point out silly grammar mistakes, which I realize, but I also see much on boards that is inherently silly, so why not also our favorite language?

Cunning linguists untie!!! ;-}

Phrazz,

Do you actually have friends at Purdue or do you just use them as a reference?

You're not a Boilermaker yourself, are you?
