I wish I was going to see Dumpstaphunk with y'all tonight!
I hear you, but at least you get to keep them around for most of the year!
Warm-up band was Soul Rebel Brass Band. A typical N'awlins street corner brass band that was good enough to start touring. Maybe not the most refined sound but they definitely blew their horns with heart and determination! Cool rendition of Sweet Dreams (are made of this) at the end. The sousaphone player was definitely working it. Lots of Dirty Dozen feel to it!
Dumpstaphunk rocked it, as expected. Most exciting thing for me was the new drummer. As you may know Raymond Weber is not playing with DP anymore (allegedly he and Ivan had a falling out) so now former Beyonce drummer Nikki Glaspie took his seat. Besides the natural excitement of seeing a woman drummer, she no question held her own at the skins and also added some sultry vocals. They let her lose on one tune and she turned it more metal than funk! I don't know for sure if she'll be at JC, but I see online that she has toured with DP ever since Raymond left so I guess there's hope.
My next planned events at the Belly-Up is Oct 14-15, two days of Karl Denson. On the 14th he plays with Anders Osborne. Then on Oct 27 it's Funky Meters.
As usual post or PM if you're going. From what I can gather from this forum, San Diego seems to be the last area with more than one cruiser but no Krewe. We gotta change that. Hey even Seattle makes us look like amateurs! Are we gonna take that? Hell no!!!
