Looking at the food options -- I see they now have an optional "upcharge" for sushi and "fine dining"

Either or both of these good? Worth the upcharge? And how much is the upcharge?

Danke!

Sushi bar is a la carte, if I remember properly... reservations are needed unless you luck out and arrive right as they open.

Its kinda "worth it" as in it is in fact sushi - but nothing that you'd rave too much about, it is nice to enjoy some wine and sushi in a smaller dining environment, but don't expect anything better than your run of the mill sushi bar.

being a "foodie", we had da sushi last year, since we are gold msc club members, & since it was free, it was worth it, but the fish, while its sushi grade, is the type that is IQF {individually quick frozen}, so no we wouldn't pay for it

We ate there once last year courtesy of silver club status (no longer an option sadly, as MSC has slashed benefits at all levels of their club cards). The meal would have cost about 60 or 70 bucks, but I don't think I'd have been happy paying that for the quality of sushi they served. Free was the right price point for us. It was still the best meal we had on board last year, but that's not saying a lot, is it?

agreed - same here. I went the last night of the cruise and the selection was very limited as they were out of nori and tempura batter as well as several other options.

Food is not what MSC is known for (or maybe it is but then not in a good way!).
I would be very hesitant to spend $60+ on anything food related on the ship.
If you can't stomach the buffet, they have free sit down restaurants. You pay
only for drinks. The food isn't great but at least much better than the buffet.
I never had the sushi but people have told me it was ok, but this was of
course the verdict from people who got it for free.
You can get a small box of sushi at 7-eleven for $6.99. :D

Just read this great blog: http://www.cruisecritic.com/memberrevie ... ryID=79686
It's a cruiser that is critical about food and service, and well the usual.
But he was really pleased about one single thing - and this one will blow your mind:

"I tried to avoid the buffet as much as possible, but I will vouch for the pizza, it was EXCELLENT... especially the spinach/bacon... to die for! "

Yes. Hot dog can be served in a pizza if you are in NJ or on MSC.
