I just ran across this in the news section of Cruisecritic.com.

MSC Gets 'Appy
MSC Cruises has launched an app that allows passengers onboard MSC Divina to chat, meet and post reviews during the ship's Caribbean sailings. It's completely free to download and use onboard and is available in the ship's six official languages (English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish). It also gives passengers up-to-date information about the ship, route, conditions at sea and in ports of call, promotions in the ship's various shops and boutiques, as well as activities and special events on board.

I wonder if it will be available for us to use?

If this thing will actually do what is says, it would help us keep in touch with each other when we're out of our rooms (which is most of the time anyway).

Completely free to download and to use on board while the ship is sailing, guests can use the app to chat with people they are traveling with.

The question I have is how do they pull off the free to use? Is it a web based app that uses Wifi? In that case you would have to pay for internet time right?

We need someone to call or e-mail MSC and find out.

This could be a game changer. Do you know how many times I don't see a person for a whole day on the boat? Think about dinner. Text the time and location to a list of your friends and who makes it is who makes it.

I think I found the app. It looks like MSC didn't put out the app, but instead joined it with all the other cruise lines.

Cruise Ship Mate

It states that you can put your phone on airplane mode and still use it without paying for the ships wifi. I don't know how that works, but I like the idea. Downloading the app. I don't know how to test it unless we get on the boat.

I want an invitation to dinner!! but I am unwilling to carry around a cell phone on the ship. I will have to use my psychic powers to receive the msg :)

That's what I was thinking too. I love the idea of it being easier to keep up with folks, which is definitely challenging at times, but the vacation from my phone is one of the things I love about being on the boat...

i usually carry my phone on the boat for clock/camera/schedule purposes. being able to actually communicate with it would be nice.

looking at the description in the app store, i think this means you can chat or whatever with people who have the app and are going on the same boat before the cruise itself. none of this leads me to believe that you will actually be able to communicate while on the boat. the airplane mode comment makes me think that you probably get a lot of maps and info in advance as part of the app itself so you can refer to it without having to download anything else.

i'm gonna install it anyway just for the map function.

Cruise Ship Mate is the one to get.

I got the message from Hill. Sent one back. I want to try sending a message while in airplane mod to see what happens.

BTW, I put in the ship and the cruise. It gave me a countdown clock and the deck maps are the best I've seen. Right there on my phone. You can download the maps, so they will be on your phone for the cruise and then release them after to free up the space. Like using Spotify off line mode.

As for my phone on the boat it is used for many things, but not to talk to the outside world. I put it in airplane mode when we leave shore. It's my clock, camera, notes, and a second alarm clock. Yes, I set 2. Now I've added this app with it's deck maps. If this chat works it will be a game changer.

I can see it now. "Anyone in line at the bar? Bring me a drink."
